Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup warm milk
- 2+1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (or 1 packet)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 2 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
For the glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
In another mixing bowl, whisk together the warm water, warm milk, melted butter, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until the yeast becomes foamy.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until it forms a soft dough.
On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
In a small mixing bowl, combine the softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Mix until it becomes a smooth paste.
Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle that's about 1/4 inch thick.
Spread the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the dough, leaving about 1/2 inch around the edges.
Sprinkle raisins over the cinnamon-sugar mixture (optional).
Roll up the dough tightly, starting at the long edge.
Cut the rolled dough into slices that are about 1-1/2 inches thick.
Place the rolls on a greased baking pan, cover them with a clean towel, and let them rise for about 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake the cinnamon rolls for about 20-25 minutes, or until they're golden brown.
In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to make the glaze.
Drizzle the glaze over the cinnamon rolls while they're still warm.
Serve and enjoy!
Note: You can adjust the amount of cinnamon and sugar to your liking, and you can also add chopped nuts or other toppings if you prefer.
Suggestions:
Add more cinnamon: Cinnamon is the key ingredient in cinnamon rolls, so consider adding extra cinnamon to your dough or filling.
Add nuts or dried fruit: Adding nuts such as pecans or walnuts or dried fruits like raisins or cranberries can add an extra layer of flavor and texture.
Make a cream cheese frosting: A creamy, tangy frosting made with cream cheese, butter, and powdered sugar is the perfect complement to cinnamon rolls.
Let the dough rise for longer: Letting the dough rise for longer can help to develop a more complex flavor.
Use bread flour: Bread flour contains more protein than all-purpose flour, which can help to create a lighter and fluffier texture.
Experiment with different shapes and sizes: Try making smaller or larger cinnamon rolls, or experimenting with different shapes, like twists or knots.
Add a hint of orange zest: A small amount of orange zest can add a bright, citrusy flavor that pairs well with the warm spices of cinnamon.
Brush with butter and sprinkle with sugar: After baking, brush the warm cinnamon rolls with melted butter and sprinkle with granulated sugar for a sweet and crunchy finish.
Serve warm: Cinnamon rolls are best served warm, straight from the oven. Reheat them briefly in the microwave or oven if necessary to enjoy them at their best.
